Write for the owner
Owners are not clinicians. Write "one tablet twice a day for 5 days, after food" rather than abbreviations. Clear instructions mean fewer phone calls and better results.
Weight matters for dose
Doses depend on body weight, so record the weight at every visit. It also helps you spot weight change over time.
Keep a copy
Store the prescription against the pet's visit record so the next visit starts from what was prescribed before. This is far easier with software than with paper files.
This is general information for clinic staff and pet owners, not a substitute for your veterinarian's advice on an individual animal.

Should a vet prescription show the weight?
Yes. Recording weight supports correct dosing and tracks the pet over time.
Can I print prescriptions from software?
Many clinic systems can produce a printable prescription from the visit record, so the medicines on it match what was billed and deducted from stock.
How long should I keep prescriptions?
Keep records as long as your professional and local rules require, and at least until the course is complete and follow-up is done.
